Who Does NSFAS Fund 2026

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme(NSFAS) helps many South African students pay for their college or university studies. It gives financial support to students who don’t have the money to afford higher education. As the 2026-2027 academic session draws near, many students are wondering who can get help from NSFAS and what the rules are. NSFAS mainly funds students from families that earn R350,000 or less per year. These students can receive a full bursary, which means they don’t need to pay anything back.

The funding is meant for public universities and TVET colleges and covers things like tuition fees, housing, books, meals, and other learning needs. This makes it much easier for students to focus on their studies without worrying about money. Students who receive SASSA grants are automatically eligible for NSFAS. If you’re a student with a disability, you can also qualify if your household income is below R600,000 a year.

Families earning between R350,000 and R600,000 might not get a bursary, but they could qualify for a loan that they’ll only repay once they start earning a certain income. To apply successfully, it’s essential to know if you meet the requirements. Make sure you gather all the right documentation and submit your application on time. NSFAS helps thousands of students each year get an education, and knowing who is eligible is the first step to getting this support in 2026.

Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding in 2026?

If you’re planning to apply for NSFAS in 2026, it’s important to know if you meet the requirements. NSFAS is designed to support students who need financial help to study at public universities or TVET colleges in South Africa. Here’s a clear look at who qualifies:

 South African Citizens

  • NSFAS is only available to South African citizens. Whether you’re finishing high school or already working but want to study further, you may be eligible.
  • NSFAS wants to make sure every deserving South African has a chance to get a good education, no matter their financial situation.

 Meeting Academic Requirements

  • Along with financial need, students also need to meet academic standards.
  • This means you must pass your subjects and maintain good results to keep getting funding.

 Studying in Key Fields

  • NSFAS gives special attention to students studying in important areas like science, medicine, engineering, and education.
  • These fields are vital for South Africa’s growth, so funding is often focused on them.

Students at Public Universities or TVET Colleges

  • NSFAS helps students who are registered at public universities and TVET colleges.
  • Whether you’re studying for a degree, diploma, or certificate, you can apply for help with things like tuition, housing, and books.

Low-Income Households

  • NSFAS is meant for students who come from homes with limited income.
  • If you and your family cannot afford to pay for your studies, NSFAS will check your financial situation and may offer support based on your needs.

Supporting documents required for NSFAS

NSFAS needs information to confirm the employment and income of an applicant’s parents, guardians, or spouse.

  • NSFAS Declaration Form: completed by the school principal or social worker. (Non-SASSA only)
  • Orphan and Vulnerable Child Declaration Form: completed by a social worker for applicants under 18. (Non-SASSA only)
  • NSFAS Consent Form: signed by the applicant and/or parent, guardian, or spouse. (Not needed for SASSA recipients)
