NSFAS is a public entity under the Department of Higher Education and Training. NSFAS provides financial help through study bursaries to deserving students at TVET colleges and public universities. The funding covers the cost of registration, and tuition as well as allowances for learning material, food, personal care, transport, or accommodation.
Its principal goal is to give financial assistance to eligible students who would otherwise be unable to pay for higher education. This financial lifeline has made numerous young South Africans’ ambitions a reality. The NSFAS Covers the following for University students and TVET students;
NSFAS Eligibility Criteria for 2025
To be eligible for NSFAS, you must meet the below criteria;
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- SASSA recipients automatically qualify for funding and need not submit any proof of income.

Understanding Who Qualifies for NSFAS Funding
UNIVERSITY
- Accommodation
- As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
- Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
- Book allowances R5200 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences
TVET
- Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
- Accommodation in a peri-urban area is R18,900 per annum
- Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
- Transport R7000 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum.

- University Degrees: NSFAS offers financial assistance for undergraduate degree programs at South African public institutions.
- TVET College Courses: It also includes students who attend Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and earn various certifications and certificates.

- Create a myNSFAS account
- Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen
