NSFAS provides funding at 26 universities and 50 TVET colleges in South Africa in the form of bursaries to eligible students. Who Qualifies To Apply For NSFAS?
To be eligible for tNSFAS funding as a student in a public university or a TVET College, you must meet the following requirements;
- South African citizens or permanent residents
- SASSA grant recipients
- Applicants whose combined gross household income is not more than R350 000 per year
- Persons with disabilities whose combined gross household income is not more than R600 000 per year.
- Must have an email account and cell phone number.
Who Does Not Qualify For NSFAS Funds?
You are not eligible to apply for NSFAS funds if you fall under any of the following categories;
- Students who have received 100% study funding from non-NSFAS sources.
- A student who already has obtained an undergraduate qualification and wants to study for a second undergraduate qualification.
- A student who has achieved a certificate qualification and wants to study for a second certificate qualification.
- Students studying at a private institution.
- Students enrolled for qualifications that are not approved by DHET and/or SAQA accredited.
Application Procedure for NSFAS

NSFAS Application Required Documents
If you are looking forward to applying for financial assistance from the NSFAS, the following documents are required to complete the application process;
Students with disabilities must provide:
- A completed and signed Disability Annexure Form, please ensure that the medical report is merged with this disability annexure when you create a file to submit with your application.
The Students must download the NSFAS 2025 Consent form:
- NSFAS reserves the right to validate all information and details provided by the applicant and parent/guardian/spouse against independent third-party data sources.
Students must download the NSFAS Orphan or Vulnerable Child Declaration form:
- This form is only to be completed by applicants who are under the age of 18 and who are orphans OR, who are vulnerable children in that they have been exposed to abuse, neglect, exploitation, risk of violence and substance abuse.
The Students must download the NSFAS Declaration form:
- This form only applies to applicants who are 34 years old or younger. This form is used to verify parental/guardian details.
Other documents that may be required, if applicable:
- Retrenchment letter
- Death certificate/s
- Divorce Decree
- Proof of legal guardianship
- Marriage certificate
- Other documents may be required for appeal purposes,….eg retrenchment letter
