Amounts indicated for accommodation, living allowance, transport and learning materials at UNISA need to be aligned with the approved latest DHET guidelines. Below are the allocated allowance to support education for the less privileged at UNISA;
- Accommodation: As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
- Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
- Book allowances R5200 per annum
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum for students in catered residence
Who Can Apply For NSFAS Unisa Allowance 2024?
The following students at UNISA can apply for allowances from Unisa 2024;
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- Students who started studying before 2018 and whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.

Documents Required To Apply for NSFAS Unisa Allowance 2024
The following documents must be uploaded to apply for NSFAS allowance for 2024 academic year,
- Copy of student ID / Birth certificate
- Copy of parent/s or guardian/ spouse ID
- Smart card: both sides of the card required
- Proof of income (where applicable)
- Persons living with disability (Disability Annexure A form)
- An applicant who is recognised as a vulnerable child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed Vulnerable Child Declaration form completed by a social worker
- An applicant who has indicated that s/he has no family member details and or abridged birth certificate must complete the Declaration: Non-SASSA.
How To Apply For NSFAS Unisa Allowance 2024
NSFAS allowances at Unisa applications are done online on the official website of the NSFAS during the application period. Follow the steps below to apply for NSFAS;
- Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab.
- Create a myNSFAS account
- Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen
- Upload required supporting documents where applicable
- Click on ‘Submit’.
NSFAS Unisa Disbursement Of Allowances For New And Returning NSFAS Students
NSFAS has confirmed that allowances have been paid to all qualified students, and the process of disbursing allowances has already begun.
Returning students’ allowances, including study materials and incidental allowances, will be distributed beginning Wednesday, March 15. New students who qualify for incidental allowances will get them on March 15 while students who did not pick the laptop option will receive them on March 22.
