NSFAS is a South African government project that provides financial assistance to students who desire to pursue higher education but are unable to do so due to lack of funds.NSFAS provides financial help to eligible South African students in the form of bursaries and loans. These subsidies are meant to pay higher education expenses, easing the financial load on students and their families. NSFAS works with South African universities and TVET institutes to guarantee that qualified students receive the necessary financial assistance. This collaboration makes it easier for students to access their funds.

As of the 2021 academic year, NSFAS will no longer provide funding for postgraduate courses. This includes postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, honours degrees, master’s and PhD degrees. Students who were funded in 2020 for any of the 2020 NSFAS-funded postgraduate qualifications will be granted continued funding in 2021 for the completion of the course.

However, NSFAS will not fund postgraduate courses for the 2025 academic year. Students seeking funding for postgraduate qualifications are encouraged to contact and apply through the National Research Foundation (NRF).

Eligibility Requirements For NSFAS Funding 2025

To be eligible for NSFAS funding, you must meet the following requirements;

Must be a South African citizen / permanent resident
Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum
Combined gross household income (persons living with disabilities) should not exceed R600 000 per annum
SASSA recipients automatically qualify for financial eligibility
Must have email and cell phone number.

NSFAS Application Requirements 2025

All NSFAS applicants must upload the following documents to support their applications for the 2025 academic year;

All applicants must provide a copy of their ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted.
Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse.
Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
Proof of income: The applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide the latest payslip not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse)
Passports/Driver’s licenses will not be accepted as proof of ID.
