NSFAS primarily targets first-degree students This means that if you’ve already completed an undergraduate degree, you’re not eligible to receive funding from NSFAS for a second degree. NSFAS will not provide funding for a second degree and This includes postgraduate certificates, postgraduate diplomas, honours degrees, master’s and PhD degrees.

NSFAS Eligibility Requirements

In South Africa, eligibility for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is based on a set of criteria meant to guarantee that financial support is only given to students who truly need it. NSFAS eligibility requirements often include the following:

  • You must NOT have completed any previous qualifications

Who Cannot Apply For NSFAS

The following students are not eligible to apply for NSFAS funding for the upcoming academic year;

  • Students who have completed a previous qualification.
  • Students with a combined household income of more than R350 000 per annum.
  • Students who have already applied, qualified and received funding. They are automatically funded for the duration of their studies provided they pass their modules and meet the academic requirements.

How To Apply For NSFAS Online

NSFAS applications for the upcoming academic year are done online on the official website of the agency during the application period. Follow the steps below to apply for NSFAS;

  •  Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab.
  • Create a myNSFAS account
  • Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen
  • Upload required supporting documents where applicable
  •  Click on ‘Submit’.

Documents Required To Apply For NSFAS
The following documents must be uploaded to apply for NSFAS;

  • All applicants must provide a copy of their ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted.
  • Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse.
  •  Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
  • Proof of income: The applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide the latest payslip not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse)
  • Passports/Driver’s licenses will not be accepted as proof of ID.
