Who Gets NSFAS

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme is a tool in South Africa’s attempts to make higher education more accessible and affordable to its population. Since its inception in 1991, has been instrumental in supporting thousands of students, regardless of financial circumstance, to achieve their ambitions of earning a higher education. The agency was founded with a single goal in mind: to give financial assistance to students who experience financial impediments to pursuing higher education.

Who Gets NSFAS

In order to be eligible for funding, you must meet specific requirements set by the agency. To get funding, you must meet the following requirements;

Must be a South African citizen / permanent resident
Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum
Combined gross household income (persons living with disabilities) should not exceed R600 000 per annum
SASSA recipients automatically qualify for financial eligibility
Must have email and cell phone number.

Documents Required To Apply For NSFAS

All applicants must upload and submit the following documents;

a copy of their ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted.
Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse.
Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
Proof of income: applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide the latest payslip not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse)
Passports/Driver’s licenses will not be accepted as proof of ID.

How To Apply For NSFAS

Follow the guide below to apply;

Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab.
Create a myNSFAS account
Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen
Upload required supporting documents where applicable
Click on ‘Submit’.
