NSFAS Funders

NSFAS funders are government departments (national, provincial, and local), government agencies, Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs), private companies, and philanthropic organizations that have signed an agreement with NSFAS to provide funding for loans and bursaries administered through NSFAS.

NSFAS has formed and cultivated relationships with a variety of industry stakeholders throughout the years. These ties must be nurtured, and new partnerships/relationships formed in order to leverage and utilize fresh funding.

NSFAS Funded Bodies 2025

NSFAS receives funding from the following;

  • South African Government:

The South African government is a major source of funding for NSFAS. The government devotes a considerable percentage of its budget to higher education, with a particular emphasis on assisting students who cannot afford to pay for their studies. This financial assistance helps you fund education, accommodation, and other necessary expenses.

  • Donations and Grants:

NSFAS also accepts donations from a variety of organizations, businesses, and charitable institutions dedicated to enhancing educational access in South Africa. These gifts and grants are frequently dedicated toward specific NSFAS activities or programs, such as scholarships for high-achieving students or the creation of educational materials.

  • Repayments and recoveries:

NSFAS runs on a revolving fund concept, which means that the money given to students as loans is expected to be returned after they have completed their education and entered the labour field. Repayments from previous beneficiaries, as well as cash recovered from those who default on their loans, help to keep the NSFAS program running. This money is then reinvested to help future generations of students.

  • Interest and Investments:

NSFAS manages its money carefully through investments, earning interest revenue to add to its financial resources. These investments are often made in low-risk, solid financial instruments to ensure the program’s long-term viability.

  • Borrowing:

In some situations, NSFAS may be required to borrow money to satisfy the demand for student financial aid. Because of NSFAS’s repute and the government’s support, these loans are frequently obtained at favourable conditions. Borrowing, on the other hand, is typically used as a last resort when other financial sources are insufficient.

  • Collaboration with Financial Institutions:

To diversify its financing sources, NSFAS has sought collaborations with financial institutions. Such cooperation may entail banks providing student loans with advantageous conditions, which can assist in alleviating NSFAS’s financial load.

  • Institutional Cost Recovery:

Some South African institutions and colleges have made financial commitments to assist NSFAS. These establishments may pay a percentage of their earnings to the plan to assist in funding students’ education.
