NSFAS How To Apply

Prospective students interested in NSFAS funding must begin to submit their applications for the upcoming academic year. Complete the online application form with the required information during the application period.

NSFAS Application Opening Date

The NSFAS application portal opens on September 28 and closes on January 31. Therefore, all applicants must submit their applications before the closing date since late applications may not be considered.

Eligibility Criteria For NSFAS

To be eligible for NSFAS funding, you must meet the below criteria;

  • Must be a South African citizen / permanent resident
  • Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum
  • Combined gross household income (persons living with disabilities) should not exceed R600 000 per annum
  • SASSA recipients automatically qualify for financial eligibility
  • Must have email and cell phone number.

How To Apply For NSFAS

Follow the step-by-step guide below to apply for NSFAS;

  • Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab.
  • Create a myNSFAS account
  • Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen
  • Upload required supporting documents where applicable
  • Click on ‘Submit’.

Required Documents To Apply For NSFAS

All applicants must provide;

  • a copy of their ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted.
  • Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse.
  • Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
  • Proof of income: applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide the latest payslip not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse)
  • Passports/Driver’s licenses will not be accepted as proof of ID.
