NSFAS Application Opening Date 2025

The NSFAS application portal for the 2025 academic year opens on 20th september 2024, allowing qualified students to apply for bursaries and loans. The portal closes on 15th December 2024. Late applications will not be considered, therefore applicants are advised to submit their applications before the deadline.

NSFAS Eligibility Criteria 2025

To qualify for NSFAS funding, you must meet certain eligibility criteria. The general eligibility criteria are provided below;

You must be a South African citizen
You must be studying or intend on studying towards an undergraduate qualification in 2025
You must be studying or intend on studying a public tertiary institution within South Africa (University or TVET College)
You must have satisfactory academic records
You must NOT have completed any previous qualifications
You must be in a state of financial need

Who Can Appeal For NSFAS Funding?

If a student’s financial aid application is denied or financial aid for a continuing student is removed, he or she may file an appeal with the NSFAS.

Appeals decisions are contingent on budget availability.
Appeals will only be entertained for students who have applied for financial aid through NSFAS.

Who Cannot Appeal For NSFAS Funding?

Students may not file an appeal if they:

Are registered for a qualification that NSFAS does not sponsor;
They have completed N+2 (or N+3 in the case of disabled students).
The student is a gap year student who was previously refused financial aid by NSFAS due to academic qualifying criterion violations.
Inquiries should be directed to the institution if they have not submitted their registration record to NSFAS or if they have submitted an incorrect registration record.
