NSFAS is a government agency under the endorsement of the Department of Higher Education and Training originated according to the NSFAS Act (Act 56 of 1999) to provide financial assistance to disadvantaged students who wish to further their studies at public universities or TVET colleges. The aid is awarded to students who desire to pursue higher education but come from a family with an income of R350 000 or less.

NSFAS provides eligible students with a variety of financial support, including funding for tuition, accommodation, study materials, and a living allowance. The particular award that a student receives is determined by their family’s financial circumstances.

How NSFAS Assists Students

NSFAS has helped students by providing them with the following to assist in their quest for Hegehr education;

  • Financial Aid for Tuition and Accommodation:

NSFAS aids students by offering financial support to pay tuition and living expenses. Many students, particularly those from low-income families, simply cannot afford the hefty expenditures of higher education.

  • Support for Learning Materials

NSFAS also aids students in obtaining money for necessary learning resources such as textbooks, stationery, and laptop computers. These resources are vital for academic achievement, and NSFAS guarantees that financially disadvantaged students have access to the resources they need to succeed.

  • Maintenance Allowances

NSFAS gives allowances for maintenance. These allowances are meant to cover day-to-day expenditures such as food, transportation, and other necessities. By relieving these financial responsibilities, NSFAS allows students to concentrate on their education without having to worry about making ends meet.
