The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is important in making higher education accessible to South African students who are financially disadvantaged. During their academic journey, many students rely on NSFAS to finance their tuition, housing, and living expenses. To fully understand this essential financial aid program, it’s important to grasp how many months NSFAS pays and the elements that determine funding length.

NSFAS funding often covers the whole academic life of a student, including undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The number of months paid by NSFAS is determined by the individual course of study and level of qualification pursued. The NSFAS does not have a time range. Bursaries are provided only if the funds available to students during the year of application are sufficient to cover the amount required by the institution’s program and the duration of the course.

NSFAS scheme beneficiaries, however, are only eligible for up to 3 years of payments. If your course of study is up to four years long, you will be entitled to receive the bursary during the registration period and until the end of your education. At any one moment, a student may only receive funding for one qualification at one institution. If the student achieved an N6 qualification at a TVET college, he or she may be eligible for university funding. Once your N6 is completed, you will need to apply for university funding.

What Does the NSFAS Bursary Cover 2025?

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursary is intended to help eligible South African students pursue higher education. An NSFAS bursary covers a wide range of fees that are important for a student’s academic career. The NSFAS bursary covers the following ;

UNIVERSITY

Accommodation: As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per annum
Living allowance R15, 000 per annum
Book allowances R5200 per annum
Incidental/personal care allowance of R2900 per annum for students in catered residences

TVET

Accommodation in an urban area is R24,000 per annum
Accommodation in a peri-urban area R18,900 per annum
Accommodation in a rural area is R15,750 per annum
Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7,350 per annum
Transport R7000 per annum
Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per annum

NSFAS Allowance Payment Date 2025

NSFAS monthly payment date for TVET college allowances is the 25th of every month, and for universities, it is the 30th of every month.

How To Apply for NSFAS 2025

Follow the steps below to apply for NSFAS;

Visit the NSFAS portal at https://www.nsfas.org.za/
Select the “Create an account” tab where you will be required to fill in your ID number, first and last name, email address, contact number and your selected password
You will then be required to validate your account and the information you have provided
After creating your account, you can select the “Login” tab and log in by filling in your ID number and password.
Fill in all the required information and upload your supporting documents.
Submit your application before the closing date.
