The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government initiative that offers financial aid to qualified students seeking higher education. All applications must be completed before the closing date since late applications will not be considered for the academic year 2025.

NSFAS Bursary Eligibility Requirements 2025

To be eligible for an NSFAS bursary, you must meet the following;

All South African citizens
Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
A student must be registered or intending to register on a PLP, NC(V) or Report 191 programme at any of the fifty (50) public TVET Colleges in South Africa;
Must need financial assistance (NSFAS will determine whether or not a student meets the financial eligibility criteria);
Returning students must demonstrate proven and accepted academic performance (academically deserving) in line with the College’s progression policy or the progression prescriptions of the Bursary Rules and Guidelines (whichever is higher);
Must not be enrolling for a qualification that duplicates previous learning that was state-funded; and

NSFAS Payment Period 2025

National Certificate Vocation (NC(v)), Semester 1 and Trimester 1 – Annual – online application and walk-in assistive capture application at the beginning of each year
Trimesters 2 & 3 as per the DHET calendar, in May and September respectively, as Walk-in assistive capture application
Semester 2 June – July walk-in, assistive capture application

How To Apply for NSFAS 2025

NSFAS application is simple, straightforward and convenient and must be done on the official website of NSFAS. Follow the steps below to apply for 2024-2025 funding;

Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab.
Create a myNSFAS account.
Upload required supporting documents where applicable.
Step 5: Click on ‘Submit’

Who Can Not apply for NSFAS 2025

Students who have received 100% study funding from non-NSFAS sources.
A student who already has obtained an undergraduate qualification and wants to study for a second undergraduate qualification.
A student who has achieved a certificate qualification and wants to study for a second certificate qualification.
Students studying at a private institution.
Students enrolled for qualifications that are not approved by DHET and/or SAQA accredited.
