Do I Have To Apply For NSFAS Every Year?
No, you do not have to apply for NSFAS every year, If your application for NSFAS funding is granted, the funds will support you until you complete your qualification, as long as you fulfil the higher education requirements. NSFAS funding is available for undergraduates at Universities and TVET Colleges. Before applying for NSFAS ensure you meet the academic requirements and have in possession all supporting documents necessary for applying for funding.

NSFAS Application Opening Date
Applications for NSFAS funding for the 2025/2026 academic year begin on November 21, allowing eligible students to apply for funding. The application portal closes on December 15, 2024, therefore all interested individuals are advised to submit their applications before the closing date. NSFAS will not consider late applications for the 2025/2026 academic year.
Who Qualifies For NSFAS 2025/2026
To qualify for an NSFAS bursary, you must meet the following eligibility requirements;
- Must be a South African citizen / permanent resident
- Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum
- Combined gross household income (persons living with disabilities) should not exceed R600 000 per annum
- SASSA recipients automatically qualify for financial eligibility
NSFAS Application Procedure
The NSFAS applications are done online on the official website of the NSFAS agency. NSFAS application procedure is straightforward. Follow the steps below to apply for NSFAS;
- Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab.
- Create a myNSFAS account.
- Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen.
- Click on ‘Submit’.

Documents Required To Apply For NSFAS
Certified copies of the following documents are required to apply for NSFAS;
Students with disabilities must provide:
- A completed and signed Disability Annexure Form, please ensure that the medical report is merged with this disability annexure when you create a file to submit with your application.
The Students must download the NSFAS 2025 Consent form:
- NSFAS reserves the right to validate all information and details provided by the applicant and parent/guardian/spouse against independent third-party data sources.
Students must download the NSFAS Orphan or Vulnerable Child Declaration form:
- This form is only to be completed by applicants who are under the age of 18 and who are orphans OR, who are vulnerable children in that they have been exposed to abuse, neglect, exploitation, risk of violence and substance abuse.
The Students must download the NSFAS Declaration form:
- This form only applies to applicants who are 34 years old or younger. This form is used to verify parental/guardian details.
Other documents that may be required, if applicable:
- Retrenchment letter
- Death certificate/s
- Divorce Decree
- Proof of legal guardianship
- Marriage certificate
- Other documents may be required for appeal purposes,….eg retrenchment letter
