Are you a high school graduate of South Africa looking forward to pursuing higher education but lack the funds for it? Worry no more, NSFAS is here to help. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government initiative that provides financial aid to students pursuing higher education.NSFAS provides loans and bursaries to pay tuition, housing, study materials, and even personal expenditures.

Prospective applicants are advised to apply now since NSFAS is open for applications from eligible and qualified students of South Africa.

NSFAS Application Opening Date

The NSFAS application window for the forthcoming academic year will commence on September 28 and close on January 31. This longer period gives you plenty of time to complete your application and ensure that you don’t lose out on the funding for your study.

NSFAS does not accept late applications, therefore, all applications must be submitted before the closing date.

Eligibility Criteria For Application NSFAS

To be eligible for NSFAS funding, you must meet the below criteria;

  • Must be a South African citizen / permanent resident
  • Combined gross household income should not exceed R350 000 per annum
  • Combined gross household income (persons living with disabilities) should not exceed R600 000 per annum
  • SASSA recipients automatically qualify for financial eligibility
  • Must have email and cell phone number.

How To Apply For NSFAS

Follow the step-by-step guide below to apply for NSFAS;

  • Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab.
  • Create a myNSFAS account
  • Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and complete the sections on the screen
  • Upload required supporting documents where applicable
  • Click on ‘Submit’.

Required Documents To Apply For NSFAS

All applicants must provide;

  • a copy of their ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted.
  • Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian or spouse.
  • Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
  • Proof of income: applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide the latest payslip not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse)
  • Passports/Driver’s licenses will not be accepted as proof of ID.
