Are you a high school graduate in need of financial assistance to study at a tertiary institution? Apply for a National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursary. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is a South African government initiative that provides financial aid to students pursuing higher education. NSFAS offers loans and bursaries to pay tuition, housing, study materials, and even personal expenditures.
Applications are now open and will close on 15 December 2024. Prospective applicants are advised to apply now since NSFAS is open for applications from eligible and qualified students of South Africa.

Is the NSFAS Application Open?
The NSFAS application window for the forthcoming academic year will commence on September 20th, 2024, and close on December 15th, 2024. This longer period gives you plenty of time to complete your application and ensure that you don’t lose out on the funding for your study. NSFAS does not accept late applications, therefore, all applications must be submitted before the closing date.
NSFAS Application Eligibility Requirements For 2025
To be eligible for NSFAS funding, you must meet the below criteria;
- All South African citizens
- All SASSA grant recipients qualify for funding
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with a disability: Combined household income must not be more than R600 000 per annum
- SASSA recipients automatically qualify for funding and need not submit any proof of income.
Credentials Required To Apply For NSFAS 2025
All applicants must provide;
- a copy of their ID. A temporary ID issued by the Department of Home Affairs will be accepted.
- Non-SASSA applicants must provide ID copies of parent/s, legal guardian/guardian, or spouse.
- Smart ID cards: a copy with both sides of the smart ID must be provided.
- Proof of income: applicant and/or parents/legal guardian/spouse (where applicable (non-SASSA) should provide the latest payslip not older than 3 months, UIF letter, appointment letter, retrenchment letter (applicant and/or parent(s), legal guardian/spouse)
- Passports/Driver’s licenses will not be accepted as proof of ID
